From the chapter: Circuit Analysis and the Sinusoidal Steady State

A voltage v(t) = 100 cos(500t + 30 degrees) volts is applied across a series connection of a 60 ohm resistor and a 0.16 H inductor. What is the amplitude of the steady-state current?

Show the answer and why

Answer: D.

The inductive reactance is omega·L = 500 times 0.16 = 80 ohm, so the impedance is 60 + j80 ohm whose magnitude is the square root of 3600 + 6400 = 100 ohm. The current amplitude is therefore 100/100 = 1.00 A, lagging the voltage by arctan(80/60) = 53.13 degrees. The value 0.714 A comes from adding the resistance and the reactance arithmetically to get 140 ohm, which treats two quantities ninety degrees apart as if they were in line; resistance and reactance combine in quadrature, never by simple addition. Using 60 ohm alone gives 1.67 A and using 80 ohm alone gives 1.25 A, each ignoring one element entirely.
