From the chapter: Metallurgical Thermodynamics: Solutions, Phase Equilibria, Ellingham Diagrams and Electrochemistry

Which of the following is a correct Maxwell relation?

Show the answer and why

Answer: A.

From dG = −S dT + V dP, (∂G/∂T)_P = −S and (∂G/∂P)_T = V; equating the cross derivatives gives (∂S/∂P)_T = −(∂V/∂T)_P. From dA = −S dT − P dV the V-relation is (∂S/∂V)_T = +(∂P/∂T)_V, and from dU the S-V relation carries a minus sign, so the other three have a sign wrong.
