From the chapter: Mathematics for the Primary Classroom, and the Errors Children Make

In the number 5,284, what is the difference between the place value and the face value of the digit 2?

Show the answer and why

Answer: B.

The digit 2 stands in the hundreds column, so its place value is 2 × 100 = 200, while its face value is the digit itself, 2. The difference asked for is 200 − 2 = 198. The value 200 is the place value on its own and is the option most often chosen by candidates who stop one step early; 2 is the face value alone; and 202 comes from adding the two instead of subtracting. The distinction matters beyond the mark: a child who has not separated these two ideas cannot make sense of regrouping or of the decimal point later.
