From the chapter: Algebra — Equations, Inequalities and Modulus

If the equation x² + kx + 16 = 0 has equal roots, the value of k is:

Show the answer and why

Answer: B.

Equal roots means the discriminant is zero: k² − 4(1)(16) = 0, so k² = 64 and k = ±8. Both signs are genuine: k = 8 gives (x + 4)² = 0 and k = −8 gives (x − 4)² = 0, each with a repeated root. Option ±4 comes from taking the square root of 16 instead of 64.
