Space & Defence Technology

India's space and defence achievements are a favourite of examiners — they are in the news, they build national pride, and the facts are fixed and easy to memorise. Who founded ISRO and where? Which was India's first satellite? What did Chandrayaan discover? Which missile did India build with Russia? This chapter turns these headlines into sure-shot marks.

ISRO: The Basics

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was established in 1969 and has its headquarters in Bengaluru. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai is regarded as the "father of the Indian space programme".

  • ISRO builds and launches its own satellites and launch vehicles (rockets).
  • Two main launch vehicles: the PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and the GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle).
  • The PSLV is ISRO's reliable "workhorse" rocket, used for many satellite launches.
🧠 Memory trick
Remember the trio: 1969, Bengaluru, Vikram Sarabhai. Think "1969 — the year humans first walked on the Moon — is also when India began its own space journey."

ISRO Milestones

Landmark missions of the Indian space programme
  1. 1975
    Aryabhata — India's first satellite.
  2. 2008
Chandrayaan-1 — India's first Moon mission; helped confirm water molecules on the Moon.
  3. 2013–2014
Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) — launched 2013, entered Mars orbit in 2014; India was the first country to reach Mars on its first attempt.
  4. 2023
Chandrayaan-3 — India became the first country to land near the Moon's south pole (lander Vikram, rover Pragyan).
📖 The story
When Mangalyaan reached Mars in 2014, India did on its first try what the USA, Russia and Europe took many attempts to achieve — and at a remarkably low cost. It is one of India's proudest scientific moments.
⚠️ Exam trap
Do not mix them up: Chandrayaan-1 (2008) confirmed water on the Moon; Chandrayaan-3 (2023) made the south-pole landing. Aryabhata (1975) was only a satellite, not a Moon mission.

Beyond the Moon: Chandrayaan-2's Setback, Gaganyaan, Aditya-L1 & NavIC

Before Chandrayaan-3's success, there was an important setback worth remembering precisely: in Chandrayaan-2 (2019), the orbiter succeeded and remains operational, but the lander Vikram crashed during its final descent just before touchdown — this is exactly why Chandrayaan-3 (2023) was launched, to complete the soft-landing that Chandrayaan-2 narrowly missed.

  • Gaganyaan is ISRO's programme to send Indian astronauts (called "Vyomanauts") into low Earth orbit aboard an Indian-built spacecraft — India's first human spaceflight mission, currently in its testing phase with uncrewed test flights preceding the crewed launch.
  • Aditya-L1, launched in 2023, is India's first dedicated mission to study the Sun. It was placed in a halo orbit around the L1 Lagrange point (a stable spot between the Earth and Sun, about 1.5 million km from Earth) to continuously observe the Sun without any eclipse interruption.
  • NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India's own regional satellite navigation system (an Indian alternative to the USA's GPS), providing accurate positioning over India and a surrounding region.
⚠️ Exam trap
A frequent trap: do not say Chandrayaan-2 "failed completely" — its orbiter succeeded and is still functioning; only the lander (Vikram) crashed. This nuance ("orbiter success, lander crash") is exactly what the paper likes to test.

Defence Technology & Missiles

India's defence technology is developed mainly by the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). Its most famous work is India's family of missiles.

Important Indian missiles
MissileType / key fact
Agni seriesLong-range surface-to-surface ballistic missiles
Prithvi seriesShort-range surface-to-surface ballistic missiles
BrahMosSupersonic cruise missile — developed jointly by India and Russia
AkashSurface-to-air missile
🧠 Memory trick
Easy hooks: Agni means "fire" → the long-range (far-reaching) missile. BrahMos = Brahmaputra (India) + Moskva (Russia) → a joint India–Russia missile. Akash means "sky" → the surface-to-air missile.

Beyond missiles, three named defence platforms come up often as current-affairs-linked facts.

  • Agni-V is the longest-range missile of the Agni series — an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM)-class weapon with a range of over 5,000 km, distinguishing it from the shorter-range earlier Agni variants.
  • INS Vikrant, commissioned in 2022, is India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier — a landmark in self-reliant ("Atmanirbhar") defence manufacturing.
  • LCA Tejas is India's indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (fighter jet), developed by HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) — another flagship "Made in India" defence platform.

Key takeaways

  • ISRO founded 1969, headquarters Bengaluru; Dr. Vikram Sarabhai = father of the Indian space programme.
  • Aryabhata (1975) was India's first satellite.
  • Chandrayaan-1 (2008) helped confirm water molecules on the Moon.
  • Mangalyaan / Mars Orbiter Mission — India was the first country to reach Mars on its first attempt (orbit entered 2014).
  • Chandrayaan-3 (2023) — India became the first country to land near the Moon's south pole (lander Vikram, rover Pragyan).
  • Launch vehicles: PSLV and GSLV. Defence R&D body = DRDO.
  • Missiles: Agni (long-range), Prithvi (short-range), Akash (surface-to-air); BrahMos = joint India + Russia supersonic cruise missile.
  • Chandrayaan-2 (2019): orbiter succeeded (still operational), lander Vikram crashed — hence Chandrayaan-3. Gaganyaan = India's first human spaceflight ("Vyomanauts"). Aditya-L1 (2023) = India's first Sun mission, at the L1 Lagrange point. NavIC = India's own regional satellite navigation system (GPS alternative).
  • Agni-V = ICBM-class, range 5,000+ km (longest in the Agni series). INS Vikrant (2022) = India's first indigenous aircraft carrier. LCA Tejas = India's indigenous fighter jet (HAL).
